Redout 2

How it started

On March 20th 2025, I finally started playing Redout 2 and had a cheese grater to the face moment. I started on keyboard as I didn't have a controller available, so it looks and feels bad.

I recorded my 4th lap because I was having so much fun hitting both boosts at the same time.

Looking back at this, is that the arcade Buran??? No wonder I kept hitting walls lol.

I learn my first track

Something possessed me to go straight into Cloud Ocean: Mistral. No idea why I really wanted to go there, but it did teach me a lot of extra technical things I would need to know later. It was here I started getting a feel for boost cycling (No idea if that's what it's called or not, but I like calling it that). Needless to say, without having the experience needed, I flail the ship about a LOT. I was probably around 5 hours of play at this point.

"Now this is pod racing" is quite common to hear when the Sulha ship is on screen. Used it for a while until I Learned just how good the ESA can be. Speaking of...

Mars Rover ain't got nothin' on me

Double negative, I know. shush. I'm faster, that's what's important.

Mars Memorial: Faith Town is the second track I learned and I'm probably the best at. It is loads of fun with plenty of twists and turns with a large jump at the end and super high speed turns out of the super fast straights. It lacks many of the technical elements that Mistral brings to the table, but that's what makes it a superb track to learn the mechanics of Redout 2. For instance, there's a bridge in the way on the final jump. You have a few options, slow down to get under it off the jump, go faster to get over it but risk overshooting the jump, or the technical route, adjust your pitch while boosting in the air. There is an additional thing you can do that makes things even more technical too. If you roll your ship 90 degrees and strafe down towards the track, you will descend faster because you aren't changing the direction of thrust. Just make sure you get your ship upright before hitting the track!

I still don't have the AI on at this point, but this is still around 12 hours of play or less.

I get involved with the Redout 2 community

I left a comment on a video by a Redout racer by the name of Dandy. I asked if the game was dead and I refused to believe it was because Dandy had just uploaded the video to YouTube, and OH BOY did I get a LOT of replies!

They wouldn't stop saying just how much they love the game and how there's still an active community. They linked me to the Redout Discord and said to hop in matchmaking on Saturdays at 2:00 PM CST.

While playing with them I started learning just how much I had to learn and unlock in the career mode of the game. The career mode is LOOOOONG and obnoxious, but it does take time to teach you new things by unlocking specific ships at specific times. I've only made it up to 600 power at the time of writing this, however I frequent the Arcade to race at SRRL speeds with ships that have more than 1000 power. They're quite fun!

During the last match I had with the folks on Redout 2, I was told which ship to pick since I was stuck with the Arcade ships. They said to take the Koeniggswerth because of the booster it has. OH BOY DID THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE! I was able to keep up with them and not constantly get DNFs. I even managed to place 2nd on Faith Town my first time running that track with them! Realizing this I've put many more hours into Redout 2 in an attempt to unlock all of the things I need to create a build for a ship. I have lots to learn, but only more to gain from getting better.

This is where I stand today in Redout 2 \/

Taking that nightmare AI to gapplebees baby!

Afterthoughts

So while making this post, I found out that the Redout franchise has an on-rails shooter game made in the Redout universe. I love StarFox and would like to make my own on-rails shooter just like it someday. But I'm actually totally psyched to play an on-rails shooter again.
